We’ve all heard a horror story or two surrounding the history of a vehicle. From dodgy number plates, altered mileage and a lack of paperwork to more extreme cases such as two cars being fused together to make one, stories abound. With 86,000 vehicles being reported as stolen in 2016, it’s essential to know the history of a vehicle before you consider parting with your money.
All our vehicles are HPI checked and cleared, which gives you the buyer lots of vital information about the car you wish to buy. A HPI check will include details about any outstanding finance deals set up on the car, or if the motor has been written off by insurance companies. Should the HPI check show any outstanding finance arrangements to still be in place, the car may legally be owned by a finance company, meaning your rights as an owner may be compromised.
Cars are categorised by insurance companies, and this should also show up in the HPI check. Categories A and B mean an insurance company has deemed a car fit for scrap. C and D mean a car is uneconomical for the insurance company to repair, but could be used again if repaired to a roadworthy condition.
If you’ve any doubts, you can check the details of an MOT are genuine if you know the make of the car and its number plate. Where to check a car’s history? Simply logon to https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history for more information.
The V5C logbook is an integral part of the history of a vehicle, giving you all the information about the current and previous owner. It is the responsibility of the car's seller to notify the DVLA of the change in ownership, so you’re officially registered as owner of the vehicle.
