Cars mean different things to different people – for some they’re a way of getting from A to B, for others something of a love affair, a hobby, and a pleasure. But one question we constantly get asked from across the whole car buying spectrum is ‘what is the best car for long distances?’
Cars for the long commute
Whether it’s a lengthy commute to the office or regular long drives on motorways and winding roads, the car you drive can turn such trips from a nightmare into a delight. Here are our top 5 best used cars for commuting, bearing all price brackets in mind.
1) Audi A5
At the top price bracket sits the Audi A5 – Audi’s practical take on their wonderful range of smooth-driving motors. Big enough for a whole family (unless you’ve an exceptionally large tribe), the option of a fuel-sipping diesel engine and smooth steering will allow you to make those long journeys with minimal exertion. Handling perfectly whether on motorways or winding country lanes, the Audi A5 tops our best long commute car list.
2) Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The luxurious C-Class from Mercedes-Benz makes number two on our list, the difference between the Audi A5 and the C-Class being so wafer-thin we almost ended up tossing a coin to decide. In the end, an inch more room in the back gave Audi the advantage, although the truly plush interior, delightful choice of upgrades and creamy handling very nearly earned it the number one slot. To be fair, we’d gladly drive either, and with a beaming smile on our face to boot.
3) Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
The Range Rover Evoque sits proudly on our list for size reasons – even the Von Trapps could fit in without too much of a squeeze. In addition to its size, the Evoque handles like a much smaller model – you don’t feel like you’re driving a tank – and its robustness breathes real confidence into the driver on those long-distance journeys. For a Range Rover, the Evoque has the lowest running costs you’ll find, a great choice of interior gadgets and enough space for a fully-grown bear to shave its legs. Well, almost.
4) Ford Mondeo
Ignore the legacy of the ‘Mondeo Man’ – there’s good reason you see so many Mondeos on the road. Put simply they’re one of the best cars to travel a long distance, and any time spent behind the wheel is a stress-free delight. Affordable, reliable, and pretty darn cool-looking, Mondeos handle like a dream, have ample space, are fuel-efficient and purr like a satisfied tiger. There may be more glamourous purchases out there, but for a long-distance commute, the Mondeo has all the substance and more than enough style to make it into our top 5.
5) Vauxhall Astra
Spacious, reliable, a great drive and in a price bracket that doesn’t mean you have to win the lottery to afford it, the Vauxhall Astra slides into our top 5 best used cars for commuting with consummate ease. Some may prefer a sportier, bigger vehicle but for regular long distance commutes the Astra is hard to beat. It may not be a head-turner, but it’ll get you where you need to go, prove an enjoyable drive, and comes with a range of gadget options to rival the bigger, snazzier motors on the market.
