Surely not. Pickup trucks roam across building sites and farmland, don’t they; they don’t venture into suburban territory. Do they? As we drive along in our sensible family hatchbacks, perhaps dreaming of the day when a gleaming Italian sports car will grace the our driveways, we don’t really think about what is involved over a year of life with child and household transportation.
A family comes with baggage. Children have bikes and scooters, we have to shift camping equipment or luggage or small items of furniture. We have to go to the garden centre (it’s the law) every Spring for trellis and pots and the like and it all has to go in the boot of a modest hatchback or crossover.
Not Such A Bad Idea
So maybe it is not such a far-fetched idea to consider a pickup truck, like the brilliant Mitsubishi L200, as the vehicle of choice for our automotive lifestyle, be it work, rest or play.
A full-sized, crew cab (or double-cab) pick-up is affordable, with plenty of cabin space and comfortable seats, all the usual dashboard toys and a strong turbo-diesel or petrol engine that will pull the car across even the most difficulty of terrain. You see, drivers of pickup trucks don't have to be a builder or a farmer to enjoy the benefits. You don't have to wear lumberjack shirts and have a pack of smokes tucked in the shirt pocket; there is no statutory requirement that you must ferry Labrador dogs about or pull a horsebox. Certainly these cars can do all that, it’s just that now anyone, from town or country, can enjoy the lifestyle benefits of these big machines.
A Better Class Of Truck
Pickup trucks are no longer vehicles that can be hosed down inside. Car buyers these days are more demanding and want automotive technology and high-quality interiors in their motors and manufacturers of these utilitarian vehicles have delivered the goods. These days truck buyers get leather seats, four big doors and a quiet ride. Some higher-spec trucks are becoming luxury vehicles in their own right that include the latest safety and navigation systems and of course proper four-wheel drive.
Then there’s the flatbed at the back. It can take everything that can be thrown into it. It is easy to access and, although the vehicles come with an open bed, there are plenty of lockable lids or truck tops available for extra security.
There you have it: A pick-up truck can manage all your family requirements. It will go to the shopping mall, take the family on rugged camping expeditions in the Scottish Highlands and, when you get back, you can load the tools and goods of everyday life and get on with the job. Not rough and always ready; do you really need more than one car to do it all? Still not convinced; fair enough. Whatever you choose to buy in the end you can rest assured that our one-owner cars
are supplied to a very high standard and have all been AA inspected
